Okahirongo River Camp is tucked far into the north-western reaches of Namibia, the Marienfluss region is a remote wilderness area where the rough roads and lack of facilities keep travellers at bay. The Skeleton Coast Park borders the area in the west and the Kunene River, known to be rife with crocodiles, bisects the area in the north, creating a natural boundary with Angola. The Marienfluss valley extends between two sets of mountains.

Long grass blows in the wind, lone green trees adorn the vast landscape and springbok roam through the spectacular vistas. The landscape is dotted with the mysterious fairy circles, round patches in a sea of grass entirely devoid of vegetation. Until today research has reached no definite explanation as to their origin. This isolated area of the Kunene region is home to the Himba people, one of the last semi-nomadic desert-dwelling peoples to grace the continent.

Okahirongo River Camp is an eco-friendly lodge built on a sweeping ridge and opening up to breathtaking views of the Kunene River. The central area, constructed above the rapids, comprises two lounges, a library and dining room, decked out in African elegance. The turquoise waters of the swimming pool spell out refreshment from the desert heat and the spacious sundeck invites sunbathing or simply delighting in the exotic grandeur of the natural surrroundings. Excellent Service, delicious African-Italian cuisine and exquisite South-African wines will round of your stay and make Okahirongo River Camp a most memorable safari experience.

Accommodation:

Cleverly built into the rocky terrain, the four luxurious double tents, one twin tent and one family suite are constructed with wood and canvas and each have a magnificent view of their own. The interiors have been furnished with a minimalist African chic. Lavish four-poster beds, splendid indoors and outdoors showers and spacious decks guarantee utmost comfort and the exclusive right of being at one with nature. Fall asleep to the sound of the rushing river below – the perfect African lullaby.

Activities:

Explore the magical surroundings on an early morning walk or a scenic drive into the mountains or golden sand dunes complete with unforgettablesundowners. The wonders of the Kunene River will provide plenty of entertainment, be it fishing (conventionally and fly fishing), cruising along the river in awe of the rich birdlife or be on the lookout for some mighty crocodiles. Get some exercise by hiking along the river and marvel at the unspoilt flaura and fauna of the unique terrain.

Visit a traditional Himba village, which you will find an authentic experience, as the semi-nomadic local tribe has not yet been spoilt by tourism, due to the remoteness of the area.

Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is located in the Purros Conservancy, 55km from the skeleton coast and around 200km south of the Kunene River in the north of Namibia. Often described as one of the last true wilderness areas, the Kaokoveld is home to the nomadic Himba tribe as well as uniquely desert adapted Elephant, lion, black rhino and giraffe.

Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is in the Purros Conservancy area, is a no risk malaria destination and can be reached by 4x4 vehicles. Alternatively a 2 ½ hour flight from Windhoek in a small aircraft will take you to our landing strip, which is located approximately 5 minutes from the lodge.

Perched on a hill above the banks of the ephemeral Hoarusib River, Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is a refuge for all those seeking a break from boisterous cars, cell phones, buzzing air conditions and the hectic rush of urban life. Possibly one of the most remote lodges in Namibia, if you make it here you will be rewarded with a genuine safari experience. Okahirongo Elephant Lodge fulfils the promise of absolute silence and complete privacy - at the same time dazzling your senses with its mix of stylish tranquillity and eccentric architecture, ultimate comfort and excellent service.

Laze by the turquoise infinity pool, read in the cool comfort of the library or merely relax and savor the African chic in one the open air lounges – this will most likely be all you could ask for in this spectacular setting.

At some point in the evening lit candles will lure you to the elegant dining table in one of the two airy dining rooms or the traditional ‘boma’ (African meeting place), where you will indulge in sumptuous Italian-Namibian fusion food, complemented by excellent South African wines. The menu changes daily, with many of the fresh ingredients grown on site.

Accommodation:

Terracotta buildings are cleverly positioned to make the most of the grand views over the rugged Purros valley – blessed with its lush green river bed and purple mountains in the distance. Each of the seven units looks out over the boundless wilderness and has been fitted with pure luxury: en suite bathrooms with an inviting bath tub and two showers, one of which is outdoors. A private gazebo with day beds and cushions extends an open invitation for ‘chilling out’ in the shade, daydreaming or star watching. The décor is a rich combination of earthy tones, dark African wood and unrefined natural surfaces - textures reminiscent of the ragged edges found in the landscape.

Activities:

Explore the true untouched wilderness area of the Purros Valley in an open safari vehicle and discover the area’s bountiful surprises in terms of wildlife. Game drives take you through lushly vegetated riverbeds and scraggy mountains, home to a versatile and adapted flora and fauna.

You might catch sight of the rare desert adapted Elephants and lions as well as various antelopes, giraffes and even black rhino. Activities include nature drives in the mornings and afternoons, night drives, morning walks and visits to the local Himba village. Sundown cocktails and special breakfasts in the most spectacular settings can also be organized.

WOLWEDANS

Wolwedans nestles into the dunes and is set against a backdrop of extraordinary natural beauty. Located in the heart of NamibRand Nature Reserve, our portfolio of camps provides the perfect base from which to explore vast stretches of awe-inspiring and undisturbed nature.

Each camp is designed with our guest’s individual needs at heart. For your home at Wolwedans you have a choice of the rustic, but unique comfort of the Dune Camp, the more elaborate Dunes Lodge and Mountain View Suite, the quietly secluded Private Camp or our latest gem, Boulders Camp, secretly tucked away amidst the grandeur of large granite rocks. No matter where you opt to stay, warmth and personalized service - embraced by a commitment to care for guest and nature alike - the hallmarks of Wolwedans.

Wolwedans is not a dune hotel or a one night stop over destination, which can be ticked off en-route to the next tourist hot-spot. It is a place to arrive, to be, to learn and unwind, whilst being looked after by a friendly and involved local team. Wolwedans provides an honest, relaxed and down-to-earth atmosphere, free of ‘wannabe’ fanciness and pretence.

You will marvel at your exclusive chance to get up close and personal with nature... in the absence of five-star city luxury, marble bathrooms and air-conditioned rooms. A liberating thought. Wolwedans provides an intriguing window for you to experience the desert’s elusive grandeur and breathtaking beauty. You have to bear in mind, however, that there are moments when the elements remind us of our human insignificance ... for as much as the desert kindles your spirits, it can also be harsh and unforgiving.:

Activities:

Accompanied by experienced guides, visitors are introduced to the many facets of NamibRand Nature Reserve's desert habitat with its diverse fauna and flora - on foot, by car, or from the air.
The classic programme - that is if you stay for two nights - would entail an afternoon drive on the day of arrival, followed by a full day-safari with picnic lunch en-route. Alternatively you can join one or two half-day excursions, perfect if you feel like lazing around for an afternoon, simply admiring the views and colours which change by the hour. The choice is entirely yours.
A special attraction at NamibRand is hot-air ballooning. If a plane is available, scenic flights to the Diamond Coast and Sossusvlei are undertaken during the late afternoon.
For hiking enthusiasts a walking trail can be arranged. Ideally you would stay one night at Wolwedans, then transfer to DieDuine for a two night trail and then come back and relax for another afternoon  at Wolwedans.
For mountaineers, a two-day hiking trail into the impressive Losberg Mountain.

If you are an open-minded and nature-loving individual in search of a distinctive desert experience far off the beaten track, Wolwedans is for you.

BAGATELLE KALAHARI GAME RANCH

( 1 Vote )

picresized_1320417583_giraffe picresized_1320417518_chalet picresized_1320417563_swimmingpool picresized_1320406012_bathroom

Bagatelle - this French word refers to something small, of little consequence, not very important! The lodge lies on the edge of the Southern Kalahari in the mixed tree and shrub Savanna.

The ranch is characterised by huge red sands dunes running parallel, and in a northern-westerly to south-easterly direction. The valleys in between the parallel dunes are commonly known as ‘streets’.

This ‘Spirit of Africa’ atmosphere, coupled with service, delivered with graciousness and charm, in an unashamedly luxurious setting, are the hallmarks of Bagatelle, providing excellent value and unforgettable memories for the discerning traveller.

The Kalahari – an ancient living desert

A harsh land, a land of relentless sun and searing wind – a land of great thirst and mystery. After the first rains, a land transformed into exquisite beauty with the dunes erupting in a blaze of colour! The word Kalahari means wilderness! Its relative inaccessibility, the harsh unyielding red sand dunes, the uncertain rainfall and lack of surface water, make it truly one of Africa’s last frontiers

Facilities:

The design and décor, materials and furnishings, gardens and natural settings, all combine to ensure  guests live their dream of an African Safari.

A rambling old farmhouse was extensively altered, upgraded and renovated to not only serve as a residence, but also as the main nerve center of Bagatelle.  An entrance hall leads to the reception, lounge, dining room, bar & cellar, library and office.

There is a swimming pool and recreation area. An open air lapa for outdoor meals captures the atmosphere of an African Safari.

Accommodation:

Although three styles of chalets are provided, all have the same standard of luxury and finished quality. Four chalets, constructed of wood and on stilts are built on top of a Kalahari sand dune, with unsurpassed views to the Southwest. The other six chalets are built in the street or valley between the dunes. These chalets are built of ‘hay bales’ with walls 600mm thick, the insulation and atmosphere are equally effective and tranquil.

The four garden courts are next to the lodge in their own garden.

The main difference between the styles of chalets besides the construction method, is the fact that the dune chalets have a bath and shower, while the ‘hay bale’ chalets only have a shower. The garden courts are adjoined. The standard and quality of finish is the same for all our chalets, with exquisite décor and equipped to exceed your expectations.

Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch has opened FIVE individual campsites. Set in a wide ‘street' between the red sand dunes, each campsite has it's own dedicated ablution block, toilet, shower, washbasin and mirror. It is fully tiled, hot water supplied by modern gas geysers and solar lights. Relax around a campfire and enjoy the Kalahari night – YOUR OWN CAMPING SAFARI!

Facilities in the rooms:

  • Minibar (Strohbale and Dune Chalets only)
  • Coffee / Tea Station
  • Air Conditioner (all rooms)
  • Roof Fan (all rooms)

Campsite:

Each site has it’s own private bathroom with gas geyser and solar lighting.

Activities:

Bagatelle has a well stocked, small library with a broad selection of books mainly on Africa and matters related to African flora and fauna.

Relaxing next to the sparkling swimming pool and soaking up the hot African sun is something to be experienced. Relax in a comfortable lounger.
In need for a special gift you are welcome to browse in our well stocked curio shop.

A ‘Nature drive’ during the early morning and late afternoon will enable you not only to view our diversified animal and bird life, but also the unique dune topography and vegetation. A great alternative to stretch the legs is the bushwalk with sign posts and marked trees with the option of a accompanying guide. Traditional sundowners on a red Kalahari sand dune will be the perfect way to watch the sun sink away into the distant dunes.

Our chef stands ready to tease and appease your taste buds, morning noon & night. Coffee, tea, snacks and drinks are available all day long from our honour bar. Relax with a cold drink, binoculars and book on our viewing platform overlooking a natural waterhole, or watch our cheetah at play.

In association with the Cheetah conservation fund, Bagatelle is the custodians of cheetahs kept in an enclosure right next to the recreation area. The facility was built exceeding the requirements laid down by the Ministry of Tourism and wildlife and under the guidance of the Cheetah conservation fund. These captive cheetahs are not able to be released into the wild, and have to remain in captivity for the rest of their lives. Bagatelle's aim is to ensure that this happens in a way that ensures the best quality of life for these speedsters of the African Savanna.

Activities:

THE AFRICAT FOUNDATION: AfriCat is a non-profit organisation set up to conserve and protect threatened cheetah, leopard, and other wild carnivores of Namibia.  Visitors will be able to observe some of this programme at work and learn more about these amazing and beautiful animals.

LEOPARD VIEWING: Leopards are frequently seen, giving visitors an opportunity to observe these magnificent predators that are ‘radio-tracked’ from our game-viewing vehicles. The leopards roam freely and catch their own prey within the 4 500ha & 16 000ha rehabilitation nature reserves. These cats however, are notoriously people-shy and sightings are not guaranteed.

THE CHEETAH PROJECT: Offers visitors a valuable insight into the ‘welfare work’ of The AfriCat Foundation.

LARGE CARNIVORE TRACKING ON FOOT: Visitors are invited to participate on foot in the radio-tracking of the rehabilitated Cheetahs or the Spotted Hyaenas on the Tracking Trail within the 4 500ha & 16 000ha rehabilitation nature reserves.

BUSHMAN TRAIL: Experience a day in the life of a Bushman. It constitutes an easy walking trail and is highly informative. Guests get to learn about the art of making traditional artefacts and how the San adapt and survive in an unforgiving wilderness environment. Participation is welcomed!

NATURE TRAIL: Self-guided walking trails of up to 8 km, for those guests who want to spend some time alone in the solitude of the Okonjima wilderness.

BIRD WATCHING: Identify some of the more than 250+ species in the area, including some of the Namibian endemics – Carp’s Black Tit, Hartlaub’s Francolin and the Damara Rock Runner.

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS:  MAIN CAMP & BUSH CAMP GUESTS ONLY! At the nocturnal hide visitors may view after-dinner 'Nightlife' such as porcupine, honey-badgers and caracal, amongst others. The Villa and Bush Suite guests do not visit the nocturnal hide. If Bush Suite guests wish to join the Bush Camp guests during their after-dinner activity – prior notice must be given! The Villa & Bush Suite guests will have the possibility to view night life from their private ‘flood-lit’ water holes.

SWIMMING: Guests are welcome to make use of the pool at any time of the day or night. All camps have their own swimming pool.

PHOTOGRAPHY: With the abundance of animals and bird life and spectacular scenery, Okonjima is a photographer’s paradise.  Be sure to advise your clients to bring plenty of film (for the old cameras) and many memory cards for the new!!

Photographers take note:  Due to the specific nature of our rehabilitation project – all free roaming cats on OKONJIMA are radio-collared.  ALL cats that are part of AfriCat’s Welfare Project are NOT radio-collared.
