The Desert Lions of Namibia are unique in that they have managed to survive and adapt to the harsh conditions of the Namib Desert. These Lions can survive in extreme conditions.  However, this is not done without an ongoing struggle between them and the local people, mostly farmers who farm with livestock.  As this is easy prey to the Lions, they often kill the livestock and in turn the farmers and local people kill the Lions by methods of shooting, trapping and poison.

The Desert Lion is highly valued as a tourist attraction and all should be done to preserve these animals.  However, most of the time the local people of this area does not share in the benefits from income of tourism.

The goal of The Desert Lion Conservation Project is to monitor these Lions, develop and implement human-lion conflict management plans at local community level , promote and develop specialised eco-safaris and make people across the world aware through various media networking of this complex relationship between Desert Lion and Local people.

I would like to thank Dr Philip Stander for allowing me to post this article and for the permission of the use of the pictures.
