LIKWETI - MPUMALANGA'S FIRST MULTI-SPECIE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Having started a working relationship with Frith Doulgas of Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (SCWRC) in October last year, and after the necessary feasibility studies were completed, Likweti formally invited SCWRC to move its operation onto the property permanently in May.
Taking the ecological make up of the reserve into account together with nature's abundance and the conservation possibilities, its became clear that Likweti offered the ideal protected space for the rehabilitation and release of wild animals.
Shortly after this, talks were started with the Mpumalanga Tourism & Parks Agency (MTPA) on the efficacy and sustainability of the relocation of wildlife onto Likweti. Part of these talks included the option for MTPA to use Likweti as a place of safety and a release location for any Parks/reserves wildlife as and when necessary. This would be dependent on the social and ecological impact the different wildlife species would have.
An old farm barn, situated close to one of 20 dams, and with easy access to the exit road, was suddenly viewed in a different light and has subsequently been converted into the rehabilitation centre for SCWRC. The centre will finally house a theatre set up, ICU enclosure, indoor and outdoor convalescing areas and soft release camps.
The Sanctuary fulfils its role when the rehabilitated animals are ready for release from SCWRC and, when possible, will be released onto the greater Sanctuary of Likweti and allowed to roam free. In the event that the wildlife of bird could not naturally take care of itself, it would be released into a natural bush enclosure resembling the natural habitat as close as possible.
