Kutandala is Zambia's smallest owner-operated camp, catering for only six guests on each safari.
The guests rooms at Kutandala are spread out along the river bank, giving ample space and privacy, and each has an en-suite bathroom with a flush loo and hot shower.
All the rooms have an unrestricted view of the Mwaleshi River and its flood plain throughout the day.
At Kutandala, the dining area, bar and library are under the shade of a huge Natal Mahogany, deliberately and delightfully low key. There are iced drinks, but thankfully no generator, and therefore no noise - lighting is provided by rechargeable solar lanterns and hurricane lamps.
The library is extremely comprehensive with over 250 titles relating to Zambia and the natural history of the area.
With such small groups at any one time, exclusivity and flexibility is the key, with every safari tailored to the interests of the guests.
Walking in the North Luangwa:
Safaris at Kutandala are primarily undertaken on foot, the classic way to appreciate Africa's wildlife. Walking from camp is always fascinating due to the abundance of game, a myriad of bird species (over 350 recorded), and the natural beauty of the area.
Being on foot is the best way of undertaking a safari for those who wish to feel close to the game and experience the sights, sounds and smells of Africa face to face.
For excursions further afield, eg the Chipopoma Falls or the Luangwa River, which involve some driving, there is a Toyota Landcruiser fully modified for game viewing.

Lion Camp is located deep inside Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, a 3,500 square mile (9,050 square kilometer) wilderness first explored by Stanley and Livingstone some 150 years ago. It is here you will find the perfect blend of safari elegance, hospitality and premier game-viewing opportunities.
The South Luangwa National Park is a rich, bountiful landscape at the end of the Great Rift Valley. It provides sanctuary for an impressive variety of birds and mammals; is renowned for its leopards, and is home to possibly the world’s largest concentration of Nile crocodiles. But you’ll never forget your first look at a lion.
The sheer size of the beasts, their regal bearing, piercing pale yellow eyes, and their deep primeval roaring at dawn leave you with the indelible impression of a place where the world is still wild, a place not yet tamed, indeed, a place that should not be tamed. This is the real Africa.
Accommodation:
Accommodating up to eighteen guests, in 9 canvas-and-thatch chalets, Lion Camp is an intimate refuge of comfort and tranquility.
Each stylish chalet features a private balcony, stand fan and ensuite bathroom with shower and toilet. The chalets stand high above the savannah on stilts, and the entire lodge is linked by a system of lighted boardwalks.
With no fences surrounding the lodge, wildlife is free to move unhindered, under the walkways. Elephant, hippos and small antelope such as bushbuck and puku, are frequently seen in camp.
At the heart of Lion Camp is a gathering place — Enjoy the step-down infinity pool, the dramatic boma fireplace, the woven copper bar, and as wildlife crosses the open plain in front of the lodge, an ever changing view. The staff are attentive and courteous, providing personalised service with attention to detail.
To complete your safari adventure, the Lion Camp chefs will create tempting meals using fresh produce and finesse
Safari:
As one of the handful of safari camps allowed to operate inside the national park, Lion Camp's location right at the heart of a prolific game viewing territory is a major attribute.
Because of this it has been used as a base by both wildlife documentary film crews and professional photographers over the last few years.
Lion Camp offers game drives and walking safaris. Whichever you choose, the knowledgeable guides will entertain and enlighten you with the secrets of the African bush. Please note an armed escort accompanies every walking safari.
Night drives, which are unavailable in much of Africa are part of the safari experience at Lion Camp. This gives you the option of viewing nocturnal creatures by spotlight, as well as animals operating under the cover of darkness, such as an elusive leopard.
The South Luangwa National Park (SLNP) is not just an animal refuge, but a living, breathing ecosystem —carefully preserved and fiercely protected. No hunting is allowed in the National Park, and Lion Camp follow strict guidelines for eco-tourism.
